A635.8.3.RB - Transformational Strategies

This week blog is review a few videos about organization transformation and leaders discussing how they led during transformational times. My favorite video featured Army Brigadier General (BG) Stanley McChrystal, who led before and after September 11, 200, the day everything changed in America and how people actual lead is changing. McChrystal Story McChrystal shared his story of a typical training day from preparing to the actual jump out of an aircraft. He walked us through the typical emotions and thoughts he was experiencing throughout the process, to include asking himself why he does what he does. He talked about how the psychological training steps were embedded in all the troops and over the last 27 years, he knew what he had to do, standard culture. However, on September 11, 2001, the team ventured out on a typical jump to return to a non-typical day in America.   He reflected on how he came from a military family and todays’ military is very different than when he e...

A635.7.3.RB - INSEAD Reflection

My reflection blog this week is to review the INSEAD video on Self-Managed Work Teams and reflect on some of the benefits and drawbacks of self-managed teams. I have been blessed to work in many types of industries from insurance, estate planning, writing computer software videos, military and my current career within aerospace. Not one of the industries were the same, but if you were good at your craft you  were automatically in that zone of being self-managed. There are benefits and drawbacks of self-managed teams and although I prefer to be on a self-managed team there are a few characteristics you must have to be a good leader.  (Teskyj & Smith, 2008) Benefits of Self-Managed Team According to Brown, self-managed teams must have “members who are skilled and knowledgeable in their areas” (p 350) I think this is one of the most critical characteristic in being a part of a self-managed team. My current team where I am the only master scheduler there is a level of aut...

A635.6.3.RB - EcoSeagate

My reflection blog this week is to reflect on the company Seagate Technology who produces hard drives and when CEO Bill Watkins took over the company the culture called the company “slavegate” and employee turnover was high. Watkins approach is spending $2 million a year on an outdoor lab experience where employees from around the world participate in a team development exercise. From my perspective there is value in this type of team development, especially in high performing teams, however cost would be a deterrent. My blog will reflect on how I think this is beneficial and why I think it is a great idea but would be a challenge for my organization to participate in an off-site team building activity. (Brown, 2011) Value of Team Building Leaders are always looking for opportunities to integrate their team members in ways that allows them to feel included and a sense that they are contributing to the team. My leaders are always giving away rewards such as movie tickets, fre...
